Sheikh Zayed was educated in the Quran and the principles of Islam by private tutors. As a young man, he developed a keen interest in desert life and spent much of his time hunting and horse riding. He also took steps to modernize the economy, introducing initiatives to promote agriculture and industry.

In 1966, Sheikh Zayed became the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the largest and wealthiest of the seven emirates that make up the UAE.
