Woodville is a suburb of Alexandria, Egypt, located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of the city center. On 6 October, a historic event took place in Woodville that changed the course of Egypt's modern history.
On that day in 1981, President Anwar Sadat was assassinated while attending a military parade in Cairo. The assassination was carried out by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a militant Islamist group.
Following the assassination, the Vice President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, was sworn in as President. Mubarak had been serving as Sadat's Vice President since 1975 and had played a key role in the country's political and economic development.
