The Nyoum Pyramids, located in the 6 October City of Egypt, are a unique and fascinating example of ancient Egyptian architecture. Unlike the famous pyramids of Giza, which were built as tombs for pharaohs and their consorts, the Nyoum Pyramids were constructed as a compound for a group of high-ranking officials.
The compound consists of 13 pyramids, with the largest one belonging to the governor of the province during the reign of Pharaoh Amenemhat III. The other 12 pyramids were built for his family members and other officials who served under him.
The Nyoum Pyramids were built during the Middle Kingdom period, between 2055 and 1650 BCE. They were constructed using mud bricks and limestone, with each pyramid having a unique design and size. The largest pyramid measures 60 meters in length and 20 meters in height, while the smallest one is only 6 meters in length and 3 meters in height.
The compound also includes a mortuary temple, which was used for the worship of the deceased officials. The temple features intricate carvings and paintings, depicting scenes from the afterlife and the daily life of the officials.
