One of the most prominent figures who left positive imprints in the history of the Middle East is His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the ruler of Abu Dhabi for 33 years before his death in 2004. One of his most important contributions is the establishment of the El-Karma agricultural project in Egypt.

After his visit to Egypt in 1996, His Highness Sheikh Zayed decided to expand the philanthropic work he started in the UAE beyond its borders. Thus, the idea of forming an agriculture project began, where trees and crops can grow in the dry desert areas, becoming a source of income for local farmers.

The El-Karma project was established in the New Valley Governorate in Egypt, with logistical support and financing provided by His Highness Sheikh Zayed. The project was designed to benefit from the groundwater, and areas were allocated for planting palm trees, olive trees, figs, citrus fruits, and vegetables.

The El-Karma agricultural project was launched in 1998, and after several years of operation, the project succeeded in achieving many tangible social and economic changes. Crop productivity doubled and the percentage of local agricultural labor contribution to production increased by 90%.

Over the years, His Highness Sheikh Zayed's philanthropic work expanded to Jordan, Morocco, Indonesia, and other countries, including education, health care, social care, and humanitarian aid.

With this project, His Highness Sheikh Zayed made El-Karma a goal for the people of Egypt, as many farmers rely on it as a source of income, and thus many job opportunities were created and community development was provided in the region.

As a lawyer, I see that His Highness Sheikh Zayed's contributions to the El-Karma agricultural project are a great example of his commitment to philanthropic work.
