Compound BO Island is an island located along the northern coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a sparsely populated island located approximately 13 kilometers off the Cairo coast. The area has been inhabited since the 5th century BC and includes several archaeological sites of interest. The island is mainly composed of post-Paleozoic limestone formations, which are also known as “spongolites”. Compound BO Island supports a wide variety of wildlife, including over 90 species of birds, various reptiles, and various amphibians. This coverage of wildlife indicates that a range of ecosystems have managed to survive amongst the limestone, providing a diverse environment for visitors to the island.

The island can be accessed from mainland Egypt via boat from Cairo or from a small number of nearby towns and villages. Visitors travelling by boat may wish to bring food and water with them, as there are limited resources on the island. Facilities for camping, swimming and sunbathing are all available, although the hosts of the compound recommend respecting the local environment whilst enjoying the area.
