Al Jazeera New Cairo Egypt is a news organization that launched in 2020 and is based in the New Cairo suburb of Cairo, Egypt. The organization is a subsidiary of Qatar-based Al Jazeera Media Network, the second largest news network in the Middle East after Al Arabiya. It's goal is to provide independent news coverage for viewers in Egypt and around the world.
The new Cairo-based station will have a team of more than 250 journalists, camera operators, editors, production staff and support personnel. The station will be housed in an 11-story building in New Cairo, Egypt which is set to open in 2021. Al Jazeera New Cairo will feature a variety of programs that cover international news, economics, human rights, culture and entertainment.
The channel will also provide high-quality content including digital video, podcasts, and interactive programming such as discussions and debates. In addition, Al Jazeera New Cairo will create a mobile version of its website and apps. This way, viewers will be able to watch live broadcast and catch up with the latest news and analysis right on their phones.
In 2020, the channel was awarded a licence by the Supreme Council of Media Regulation (SCMR) in Egypt to operate both domestically and internationally. This marks the first time Al Jazeera has been allowed to launch a major news outlet in the country since its main channel was shut down in 2013.
The station will operate independently from the Al Jazeera Media Network and its parent organisation, the Qatar-based government. It's general director is Mohammed Sami and is set to begin broadcasting in 2021.
Since its launch, Al Jazeera New Cairo has already become a source of controversy among Egyptian authorities due to its refusal to adhere to the government’s censorship and restrictions on free speech. Despite this, the channel has garnered international attention and support from various media outlets and press freedom organizations who praise it for its commitment to providing unbiased news coverage.
Al Jazeera New Cairo Egypt is an ambitious project that could potentially revolutionize media in the region. With its groundbreaking technology and quality journalism, the channel promises to provide a much needed platform for people in Egypt and beyond to access and consume independent information.
