On October 6, 2020, Egypt held its first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. The election was seen as a major step in Egypt's transition to democracy, as it was the first time since then that the country's citizens had the opportunity to vote for their representatives in the House of Representatives.

The election was contested by more than 5,000 candidates from a variety of political parties and independent candidates. The two main parties were the pro-government Nation’s Future Party, led by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and the opposition Bread and Freedom Party.

The election was marred by allegations of fraud and irregularities, as well as a low turnout of only 28%. The government had imposed a number of restrictions on the media, including blocking websites and banning live coverage of the election.

The results of the election were announced on October 20, with the Nation’s Future Party securing a majority of the seats in the House of Representatives. The Bread and Freedom Party won only three seats.

The election was criticized by international observers for its lack of transparency and for the government’s tight control over the media. However, the election was largely seen as a positive step forward in Egypt’s transition to democracy.
