On October 6, 2020, the Egyptian people celebrated the 205th anniversary of the Battle of the Nile, a decisive naval battle in the French Revolutionary Wars. The battle, which took place on August 1, 1798, saw the British Royal Navy defeat the French fleet, which had been sent to Egypt by Napoleon Bonaparte. The victory secured British control of the Mediterranean Sea, and helped to ensure the safety of Britain's vital trade routes.

The Battle of the Nile was fought off the coast of Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria. The French fleet, led by Admiral François-Paul Brueys d'Aigalliers, was composed of 13 ships of the line, and 4 frigates. The British fleet, commanded by Admiral Horatio Nelson, was made up of 14 ships of the line, and 2 frigates. After a hard-fought battle, the British managed to sink or capture 11 of the French ships, and the remaining two were forced to retreat. Nelson was wounded during the battle, but survived.

In Egypt, the Battle of the Nile is remembered as a major victory in the country's struggle for independence. The battle marked the beginning of the end of French rule in Egypt, and was a major factor in the eventual establishment of the modern Egyptian state. To this day, October 6 is celebrated as a national holiday in Egypt, commemorating the 205th anniversary of the Battle of the Nile.
